Religion on Fire: Documenting Russia’s War Crimes against Religious Communities in Ukraine project was initiated in March 2022 by the NGO “Workshop for the Academic Study of Religions” and supported by government institutions and public organizations. The project aims to record and document damage to religious sites as a result of the actions of the Russian army in Ukraine, as well as war crimes against religious leaders of various denominations. The project team has created and is constantly updating a database where cases of destruction of religious buildings during hostilities, as well as harm to religious figures, are systematized chronologically and by degree of damage. The database describes the time, place, course of events, the nature of the damage, and the presence of signs of war crimes and other violations of international humanitarian law. The collected materials can be used in scientific studies of the impact of the war on the religious life of Ukraine, and in the preparation of reports by national and international public or human rights organizations.
