Among the cultural figures killed during Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine are dozens of writers, musicians, translators, librarians, artists, photographers, archaeologists, conductors… both men and women.
The joint project of PEN Ukraine and The Ukrainians media “People of Culture Taken by War” has a dual purpose: to preserve the memory of people whom Ukrainian culture lost in the war, and at the same time to testify to Russia’s genocidal intentions. PEN Ukraine has been monitoring cultural losses since the beginning of the invasion.
“People of Culture Taken by War” is a series of portraits that emerge in the process of studying their work, conversations with relatives and colleagues, and trips to Ukraine. Despite their inevitable fragmentation and inexhaustibility, these reportage and biographical essays create a map to study the legacy of the project’s heroes.
